I have the itch to travel, but I can't find a show in mid-April to early May. I want to go someplace new and that has CM glaze classes. Too bad NAMHSA can't keep it's member show listing right up to date, that would help.

If you wanted early April :) the first weekend of April is MAR, 2 day show, fun, close to 3 airports so a good deal could be had ;)

I recommend Heather M.B.'s show, Smoky Mountain Spring Fling in NC. It's got quite the lengthy custom glaze classlist, and is the last full weekend in April, so a NAN-qualifier for this year. :)

SMSF was a very excellent show last year, and it would be the right timing for me this year. However I'm not thrilled with the china classes being on Sunday, from a travel point of view. I don't have any resins to show and I don't do performance, so if I came in on Friday I don't know what I'd do with myself all Saturday! And I'd have to stay over until Monday. Sooo, I'm still thinking it over. It will really come down to how many new chinas I finish in time to make it worth the trip!
ooh! Ooh! Save your travel for early October!!! :D I'm trying to put together a show at the Zoo here in Seattle. I'm hoping to have a pretty beefy china class list. ;)

Oh, sounds cool MGR! But my other personal twist is that I can't travel during the first 2 weeks of any month because of the magazine I produce. Its deadline is the 15th! So unless it do a really short weekend, I usually can't get away early in the month. Its a drag sometimes!

So does that mean BOYC would be "out" for you? Because obviously there you'd have the ultimate in glazed custom classes...

Aww, darn! Well, if you can travel in May, I recommend Northwest Congress, which is whichever weekend is closest to the 25th of May. I want to say it's the 21st and 22nd this year....

I am under the impression that I and my chinas are not welcome at BOYC. Especially after my recent altercation with Joan Berkwitz. I have never been invited to sponsor/hold a challenge class for my work at BOYC, but they've got them for every other china maker you could name. So I got the message.

Dear Karen,
Let me be the first to say that BOYC and all persons involved with the show bare you no ill will, nor were we ever aware that we made you feel unwelcome. As far as the challenge classes go, many of the artists who are sponsoring challenges were not invited to do so. They contacted me initially, and said that they'd like to sponsor a class for their work, so I arranged it. In fact, last fall when I posted a call to ceramic producers on Breakables to help out with awards, it stated in bold letters at the bottom of the linked page that any artist interested in holding a challenge was to contact me ASAP. I am sorry I did not issue a personal invitation to you specially- I did not realize that doing so would hurt your feelings.
Sincerely,
Adalee Velasquez

Dear Karen,
I am writing this publicly because I want everyone to understand. I never have had it in for you, I never tried to make you unwelcome anywhere. We have had our disagreements about things, but I have always tried to be fair and reasonable.
Please stop telling people that I have some ill will towards you, it simply isn't true. You are welcome to come to BOYC, in fact I distinctly remember asking you to donate for your own collectors class once years ago, but do not have the email any longer. I respect and admire your work, and am very ready to just drop this whole subject.
Let's move on, please, we are both adults and we both work within the very small pool of china collectors. There is plenty of room for everyone, plenty of interest in every facet of our little world.
If you would like to discuss this subject, please email me privately. There is no need to continue in this vein. Every day is a new day, and every opportunity for growth and change is worth seeking.
Sincerely,
Joanie

I will certainly drop this subject, with these last points.
I did ask Adalee to If I could sponsor a challenge class a few years ago, and I was told it was too late to add another class. I do remember it was several months before the show, and couldn't see the difficulty since it was a 2-day show and I would be paying costs for the class. I wanted to sponsor a class for ALL artists whose work was being produced by Alchemy--aside from AAA--because we were not being represented with such a class at BOYC at the time. And there were quite a few artists!
This, and the fact that I have not been asked to sponsor a challenge class for my work at BOYC, led me to the conclusion I drew. Because if I had been invited, I would have sponsored a class!
Is it the responsibility of hobby artists to contact every live show and offer sponsorships or other support? I don't think so. I was under the impression it was the other way around; live shows ask me for donations and other support of their show's offerings, and I am generous when I can be. But when an all-china show has a long list of "challenge classes" for every hobby china maker I can think of, it seems like it would have been a courtesy to ask me, too. What else was I to think, other than that I was being ostracized for some reason?
If I wasn't, then I stand corrected and I am sorry for the misunderstanding about BOYC's policies.
From my side of the fence, it has been easy to feel hurt and ostracized lately! I am more than willing to bury the hatchet and move on, but I believe I am the injured party and the one due the apology!

I'm sorry, Karen, but I DID ask you. It was the year that you were doing Breakables. You replied that you didn't want to start that sort of thing, you were too busy. I wish I had the email, unfortunately, emails are ephemeral. And since you didn't mention it later, and I haven't read about you sponsoring at other shows, it just never occurred to me to ask again.
I can't speak to the other, perhaps Addi can. But she sent out a general call for artists to sponsor classes in the past. It is true that most of us are approached to sponsor things for shows, but I have also volunteered to do so by writing to the showholder when I felt that a particular show was outstanding. I have also said to showers "please let so-and-so know that if she wants me to, I will send awards." It would be nice if some people spoke out here that I have said that to, or who have stepped up to sponsor their own artist challenge without being asked, but I have the feeling that not many people are following this thread.
As to "injured parties", well, that will just have to be another thing we disagree on. :)
