Hi all, I am repainting a SM Standing Foal and I am going to be making a little grassy base for him. What do you think...should he be permanently attached to the base, or should I not attach him and just have him sit atop it?

I vote for not attached, especially if you show. Bases can be a pain when you're transporting horses.

I suggest having a removable base. I've heard of more legs breaking during shipping or going to shows with permanent bases. Too much torque. Good luck with your project.

I think it depends on the model - we sell models with both attached (Jethro) and detachable bases (micro minis). The detachable bases make the models easier to paint and to ship, but the attached base makes a big fragile guy like Jethro more sturdy in the long run. I've heard pros and cons to both detached/attached bases, so I think it's mostly a matter of preference and weighing how sturdy the model is with a detachable base. I'd hate to see your new model tip over on a detachable base or come detached and fall down and chip or something!

Well, I decided on not attached. The torque thing makes sense to me on some models (although I doubt it would cause a problem with a plastic SM), and it also makes sense that the base will help secure a heavy horse too...I guess it just depends on the model. :) Here's a link if you want to see my little guy...
