Chilao School, in Chilao Campground
Angeles National Forest (Los Angeles County) California
All model horse enthusiasts welcome - prior photo or live show experience not required

Chilao School is located in the heart of the Angeles National Forest. A 2,000 square foot former public school, we'll transform it for the weekend into a giant photo diorama on one side and a show ring on the other. Weather permitting, there will also be four to six outdoor set-ups for photography and at least one natural rock formation for natural light and background photos.

Friday there is no set schedule - it will be a day to get situated, relax, walk, hike, use any set-ups you like for pictures, watch movies (there's a tv and dvd player in the school), do crafts, read a book...whatever you please. We'll provide some snack and dinner items (the menu to be disclosed about a week in advance).

On Saturday we'll get busy...weather permitting your best outdoor photo opportunities are in the morning and the afternoon, so photo showers might like to spend the morning outside. Around 11 AM we'll have an indoor diorama contest; some items will be supplied, and you are welcome to add your own elements; the dioramas can then stay up for everyone to use.

At noon on Saturday Jennifer Bray Buxton will be our judge for a non-NAN halter show, with ten OF and ten CM classes. There will be ribbons and prizes. Somewhere in the course of the afternoon we'll have lunch; it may be buffet style so that other activities can take place simultaneously.

At an elevation of 5,200 feet, everything up here is dictated by the weather, but historically, mid-May is about as close to perfect as you can get, so we may be able to get some late afternoon picture taking done, or hike/walk/bicycle/jog/explore before the sun goes down. The school will be available for indoor photos/movies/etc. for however long everyone wants to use it.

On Sunday Jennifer will return for a performance show and clinic. This will be an excellent opportunity for novice and seasoned showers to get feedback and to discuss each other's entries in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The class list that Jennifer has designed offers a very wide range of options for showers. There are only ten classes, with all models (OF, CM, AR, China etc) combined, so there will be time to talk about the strengths and areas for improvement with each set-up. Those who register for the performance show/clinic will have a chance to win a Breyer NIB Don't Look Twice (traditional scale quarter horse mare). There will be ribbons and prizes as well.

In addition to photo opportunities and two shows, you can get some shopping done. Several people will be bringing horses and model horse related items to sell, and Breyer donated a 2004 Breyerfest SR, Descaro, a semi gloss bay roan mustang, one of 950 made. Descaro will be offered as a silent auction piece.

Class lists follow and our flier is attached. You can download the registration packet from our website:

Here's a map of how to reach Models in the Mountains at Chilao School, located in the heart of the Angeles National Forest. Here is what our home-made signs look like that I put out for events, and here is the official USFS sign and a mile marker. We are at mile marker 49.69 just past this sign. Also if you call 805 217 0364 you can hear directions.

Two Updates: Stock Halter Class Split, Weather

Several showers have expressed an interest in splitting the stock class and so it will be split as follows: 4A Solid Color, 4B Appaloosa, 4C Paint

We can't split any more classes because I will run out of prizes for you and I don't want to make any more changes without Jennifer's approval (she was on a plane heading to Los Angeles when I did the class split).

Here is the local weather forecast - short version, Friday will likely be wet and cold. You are welcome to come, we do have a campground and there is space here at the school, but if you want to wait until Saturday, that's fine too. There is no agenda for Friday - if you show up, there are indoor and outdoor photo tables already set up and good to go.

Rain and snow showers likely. Some thunder is also possible. Cloudy, with a low around 34. South southwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 48. West southwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Friday Night
A 20 percent chance of showers before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. West southwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming northwest in the evening.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 54. West northwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming southwest in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.

Saturday Night
Partly cloudy, with a low around 40. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 56.

Sunday Night
Partly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Models in the Mountains - Results, where to go for lots of pictures
Saturday May 16 Halter Show/Clinic
Sunday May 17 Performance Clinic

MIM 2015 went through a series of major last minute changes, scheduling conflicts…and even snow. The people who were able to attend had a great time and importantly, we were able to do something that almost never happens at big live shows; we shared stories, techniques, information, sculpting methods, tack making skills, painting demonstrations, prepping tools…MIM 2015 became the symposium it was originally intended to be…AND we had a show.

(The placing numbers fell off in the copy and paste process - my apologies).

We will definitely hold the event again in 2016, although not in May. Seeking NAN approval was discussed as it will bring more showers; keeping the event more social and educational and less competitive was also discussed. There was something really refreshing about being able to stop in the middle of judging a class to discuss everything from breed history and functional conformation to the specifics of a mold and its collectability…and something very healthy and wonderful about so much laughter. I am inclined to suggest that we have at least one more event before we revisit the NAN discussion, because we may find that Models in the Mountains has an important place in the hobby in addition to being a live show. I will listen to what everyone has to share and listen most keenly to those who participated, because the school and the forest are something you need to understand through experience to really appreciate. And now without further ado, the results…
