this has been a dream of mine for a LONG time! This horse is a portrait of a real paint horse - how ever she turned out much lighter then expected, though much more feminine then i could have hoped for. I named her Cheyenne - dont know why, it just seemed to fit her - trust me i DID try and gte her a fancyer name, but it just didnt work for this gal, so Cheyenne it is...

My cam refused to show her real color but here they are:

thank you for the positives on this gal :) She was a budle of fun to do. I just noticed a few small minors i need to fix on her. Her tail/mane is pastelled, eve though i wrapped her well before doing that a few black sust corns sneaked their way into her white (thank gowd no where else!), thats a easy fix, but a fix to be done never the less, oh yeah and the 2 dots on her muzzle :) (im thinking im being picky, but i KNOW theyre there - there for i see them... LOL

OKay, i hope youre ready for this and a lot of patience - i take about a hour to paint each eye, if is the simple brown one - blue eyes or combo eyes takes even longer to do - ex the half brown and half blue eyes. Ive simplified this a lot - theres more going into these eyes, thenthe basic stuff below :) Play around with the eyes, and when you get more confortable dont be afraid to try new stuff out.

Anyway i use the following colors;

raw sienne, burnt sienne, raw umber, burn umber, white, black, process cyan blue, and metalic blue

First make a mix of 3 parts of white, and ½ part of raw sienna, mix it well and thin it so its youghurt in consistence. This is the base for your eye, apply it on the intire eyeball. You will need to do about 4 coats of this, depending of thickness.

take the raw umber, thin it up to soame consistance as above, and coat this as the beginning of the brown eyeball, leaving some of the light pink left as the scelera of the eye.

Next you take raw sienna, a very tiny anount, place this right before the curve edge of the raw umber. creating a lighter look to the eye in the front.

You take equal amount of burnt sienna and burnt umber and mix up. This will be your eyeball - apply and make sure you still can see some of teh raw sienna in the front side of the eye edge.

Then apply a eclipe shaped amount of black in the middle of former layer, for the pupil. REMEMBER: The horse pupil is almond shaped - NOT round as the human or cats pupil is.

Now for the debt effect - the blues. (cyan & metallic) (i got the blues, i got the blues.. lalala.. oh its not a concert.. durn it.. i think i just ran something off singing heh) This this up to a milky consitence. (both of them). Apply thise a SMALL blue strip in the middle of the black pupil. Apply 3 layers of this (Cyan blue)

Then take the metalllic blue and add a even tinyer amount in themiddle of the former blue detail. Since this is metallic, and you do not want the horse to look " spaced out" only add ONE layer of this.

ALMOST done now!!! :hubba

Next you take some raw umber, and burnt umber (equal parts) thin it to water consistence. This you add in FINE layers over the acelera. Add 2-3 layers depending of thickness of the paint.

VOILA - you're done -

this is VERY simplified - but it works. The more confident you get in painting eyes, the morey ou will wish to explore to get better at this :)

All the best and good luck

Sanne
