The want ads on MH$P's? :2spy "I'm looking for these resin, blah Eberl, blah Rose and blah Mink. I don't have any money, but can trade prep work. I haven't done any yet, but I'm willing to try." :ever Or "I NEED these models, Breyer OF blah, blah, blah and blah. I don't have any money, but would be willing to take whatever you give me. You will have to pay the postage too. Thanks!" :uh Okay, I exaggerate, but only by a little. :D

I always like the ones that say "Wanted: Traditional Nahar. Will trade my very common resin in return." I wonder if that's ever worked... :uh

Yeah, the ole "want something for nothing" trick.
And what the heck is it with all these kids (12-15 year olds) doing prep work? They think there's nothing to it, well it DOESN'T work that way. I had a biotch of a time prepping.

Totally. I'm trying to learn to prep myself, but let me tell ya...the second I start to feel uncomfortable I am holding off until I can get one of my more experienced friends to take a look. I would never trust someone who's never ever prepped before...sorry to be a snot, but it's true.

You're not being a snot.
If I drop $200-$500 per resin I sure as hell ain't going to get it prepped by a kid.

Yeah, I've been noticing this phenomenon ever since I started getting JAH 25+ years ago, the kids advertising in the want ads that they want these models for less than $10, or free. I chalk it up to them being kids and don't pay them much attention.

Sadly a lot of kids think THEY can make a ton of money doing something EASY...uh, it ISN'T easy to prep...I have done it close to 25 yrs and the best way to learn how to do it is to do it wrong a few times...I would get something completely painted and notice this line or that divot and have to start all over again. It is time consuming and BORING. My daughter learned how to do prep work waaaay back when she was 12 or so...since she knew it had to be perfect she would seek out the 'invisible' seams or spots and go to work on them...last year she took some prepping orders, became an instant hit and was completly inundated with work. This year she has backed off of doing any prep work but for one or two people, and helping me out when we are sitting around at horse shows waiting for classes. I have tried to paint "pre-prepped" horses (meaning someone else did them) and it just was'nt comfortable for me...I ended up going over it again to please myself.
Mostly what happens is these kids end up way over their heads (much like photo shows used to be!) and the person wanting the work prepped loses their horse, or has to resort to tracking the parents down to let them know what their kid is up to...Not easily done...

I've had people offer to trade me CM work when my ads say "trades for OF horses only".

Yeah, I have noticed those ads myself. I have an ad up that says I am looking for broken or unloved resins but at least I am willing to pay for them. I wouldn't generally trust someone that was offering prep work or CM services since if they were any good they would have customers and be able to afford what I am selling:lol Gosh, that kinda sounds mean, but you all understand what I am saying I hope.

I dont really mind people asking if I want to trade. You never know when they might offer you something good. Now if I really need just the money I will out no trades in the add.
I will tell you a good way to learn prepping, at lest it was for me. Do a few BHR resins and make them look nice , that teaches you, LOL

I agree...it doesn't hurt to ask, but when you have ads that specifically mention "no trades at this time," well...it gets a little tedious.

Yes I know what you mean. But I also want to say that I am younger, but I know how hard and how much time it takes to prep. I prep my own resins.

I'm not saying that all teen preppers are bad, I just think prepping isn't a service that just anyone can do.

Ugh, I've had a lot of people ask me if I'd take a lot of things. My favorite is the "I can't afford the cost, so will you take less than half of the going price?" This is especially annoying when it's an eBay auction, which has been bid up to some price and then they offer a lot less... Um, if I wanted $30 for it I'd skip the eBay fees and list it for $30. :realitybi

So true!!!! Even when I wrote a very specific want list at the bottom of my ads people would still offer other things that I specifically mentioned I didn't want! I think some of the younger people just don't have a grip on how much things really are. Like they may see a resin cost $200 but not really "get" how much that is and think they can trade their unproven services for it. I wonder if that is why there are so many 18-22 yo collectors who post these desperate need cash ads. They overspend because they just haven gotten the idea of budgeting and are too used to if I want it I get it! I know it never hurts to ask but some of those ads are pretty silly when they are offering basic OFs and only want the hot resins in trade.

Well, I think if you want to learn prepping, you should start on plastics, and perfect those, then go onto resin. Why ruin something worth $200, when you can do it for a lot less. I'm talking Breyers made before...I don't know, before they started being half way decent. The ones with the real crappy seams. If you want something really hard, do an Eberl. I'm working on my second of the ones she casts, and let me tell you. :1hammer

I'm doing a PAM too. Did yours have a huge gouge in one butt cheek(under the tail)? A couple of my others do, but not all.

Yep. I gave both of them full on butt jobs because of that big flat area with the giant seam that is in between her back legs. And those pasterns...hideous. Definitely tons of work.

They should make a website just for people like that. They would call it "Model Horse Want Pages." :roflmao There would probably be more pages of "want" ads there than there are "sale" ads on MH$P! :haha

Probably not... but I'm living proof strange trades can happen. Way back when, this was late 1970s or early 1980s, I got a letter out of the blue from a gal and she wanted to trade her Hagen-Renaker white "Sheba" for my Hartland 3-Gaiter in black woodgrain who had been featured on a hobby magazine as a cover drawing.
Her "Sheba" had two breaks and a chipped ear, and my 3-Gaiter had had the eyes and hooves glossed black.
She didn't like Arabs and loved ASBs.
I loved chinas, particularly H-Rs more than I liked plastics.
We traded and I still have that "Sheba" and she is a lovely thing! And currently worth a LOT more than a Hartland 3-Gaiter would be.
Go figure!

I think I had someone offer at a show to trade me their Commander Riker for some Stone Arab SR I had (that was worth about $150 I think). She was young (12-15) so I tried to be nice (I think it was the pretty pony syndrome of just seeing it and wanting it with no concept of the value, release price, etc). It was funny though because when I very kindly explained to her that the trade simply was not equal (i.e. your $30 for my $150 model), and she still didn't get why I didn't want to trade. Oh well...I guess they all learn at some point. I always did wonder if anyone actually sent models to those "free models wanted" ads in JAH.

I've noticed those ads... and they rank right up there with the generic "make offer" ads. I don't bother with them any more. :)
I prep my models... it is hard work and a few times now I've stripped a model back down after finding the missed spots *glares at mini resin on 4th stripping* and while it gets tiresome to find the seam after a few layers of pastel I'd rather strip it down and acknowledge that it was my own booboo. :) I wouldn't trust a beginner with my models, I barely trust ME with my models some days.

This reminds me of the bodies wanted ads too. I want x bodies (like PSAs) for $5 or trade only and I only want them prepped free to as cheap as possible...I can trade you some FAS bodies for ISHs if you like they are broken but that's ok.

That and the want ads for resins that aren't even sold out. All they have to do is go to the artist's webpage and see for themselves. I sometimes write them and tell them, but other times I don't. If they don't have the time to look it up, why should I do it for them. :rolleyes

It's the same in other hobbies too. I collect Hallmark Keepsake Christmas ornaments, and on the Hallmark boards there's always people who want the year's "hot", hard to find ornaments, or the older series editions, and they always want them for box price or to trade a bunch of common, easily-found-for-75%-off-after-Christmas-ornaments for them.

I took a trashbag half full of them to goodwill because I couldn't sell them on ebay for hardly anything. I think the highlight was selling a Pansy angel from the language of flowers series for a buck. I'd paid $35 for it just a couple of years previous. :/ I lost interest in hallmark ornies because well, you only see them a few weeks out of the year, they take up so $#>@ much room, I hate collecting boxes (but God forbid you should toss them). The ones I decided to keep, I ditched the box. That first issue of the Lighthouse? No box. Ditto the church, all the SW and ST ships. Boxes? I don't need no stinkin' boxes. Oh yeah, and the last few years, so few of them really interest me.
