Attached below is a picture I rejected from my show string. Everyone who wants to, please state what is wrong with it so that newbies can see how NOT to do it, lol. . .I have a few more of these so I will post "rejects" occasionally.

Ooh, fun!! This is a great idea.

I'm not an avid photo shower, although I really enjoy judging the IMEHA shows, so I'll give it a go. From my POV, I see the following things wrong with it...

The chain link fence and the building in the background are fairly fuzzed out so they aren't TOO noticeable, but they still make the model look like a model rather than a horse.

The angle he's photographed at sort of darkens him up too much. His crest and ears are light and his face and neck a little too dark...better angling/lighting would show off his face better.

The brightness of the background also makes the horse itself look pretty dark...a better-lit foreground would be nicer.

I agree with MGR, and will just add that for judging halter classes, I would much prefer to see the horse in profile, not at an angle. :)

his front leg looks a bit awkward at that angle as well. Looks too stretched out.

Ditch the background, get the feet showing along with the horse at a much better angle.

Oh the number of photos I had to chuck in the wastebasket when I first started showing <LOL>

I'm celebrating 20 years in 2005 of photo showing so the vast majority of rejects have been tossed <LOL>

Alright well I am one of the newbies your helping lol. Am I right in the assesment that there is a glare on his head (between the ears) making his ears look a bit off shape?

The things that immediately jump out for me are he is not at an angle to be able to really judge his conformation correctly. His hooves are buried in the snow and while from a judging point of view the sun glare on him does not really matter, it is a pet peeve of mine to try not to have any shiny spots on the models :grin

Two main reasons why can you spot them? :winkOk wait lemme try....... first it's the lighting! RIGHT!?

Then it's the backround. It's black! You can't see the top of his tail! And everything just looks weird!:wtf Like his top half was CUT OFF or somethin! It's like two-toned and distracts the eye from the top of his body. Not to mention, look at his neck! The black is making his neck look ETCHY and computer-ish,:uh lol.

And maybe it's the angle? The top pic is coming more from the same level and the bottom seems to be coming more from the top, exposing a tad bit more of his face and body.

YAY! WHAT DID I WIN!? lol:lol

Btw, you make Squeak look GOOOOOOOOOOOD!:adore:adore:adore

not sure why you do not like it but I feel like I am more into the back ground than the horse

Altho I do think the sencond photo is better, I personally think the background is a little TOO similar colour to the model. However it is a lovely photo.

My thoughts on the horse in the snow... Bad lighting, bad angle, background is too distracting. By this I mean that not only is the background not really in scale with the model, so much more is going on back there that I skip right over the model to see what's back there.

And the arab...heh, I thought that horse looked familiar. Hi Liz! *waves* I definately like your second photo better than your first. The black hides his tail, doesn't give much depth to the image. Black would have been great for a head shot, like what they do with Arabs in the horse magazines, but I don't think it does well for an arena photo. The second photo is much better, but I do have to agree with sheepwithbellson. The horse blends in too much with the background. Too many of the same colors.

I'm still pretty new at this myself. My first photos were horrible! I'd like to hope I've come a long way!

And the snow is out of scale for the size of the horse ....it looks like a model horse sitting in snow; other things I noticed... photo rather dark, horse shot at an angle.

Snow is a no, no. The light is too harsh in the back, which makes the model back lit, not a good thing unless you want a silhouette. The shadows in front of the model don't help the judge see how it really looks. The angle is a no, no, you can't see the real horse. The stuff in the back makes the model out of scale. The hooves are covered up.

Well, the black background hides the tail and makes the face darker, and the white of the wall does something with the markings, but the black background, actually makes the color more detailed or intense looking then the sandy with blue background. I like both, with the exception of not being able to see the tail, and the other one washes out the color on the horse, almost blending too well with the background. It may help to lower the horizon line nearer to the wall edge, instead of having it so far up.

LOL Sammie yes it was mainly the black background and I cropped the image a little too close to his tail.

He is actually my Squeak 'look alike' I entered him into a CM show once and I was reminded that it was a CM not OF show...hehe the show holder thought he was the OF Squeak, which is a good thing because I wanted a Squeak! :D

I have hunted all over my PC for a better comparison photo entry but I have deleted most of the images I dont use anymore :(

:hello Corrie

Yes I agree with everyone his color does blend with the background in the 2nd photo but I did feel it was better than the black, I have not had a chance to really go out and find a more suitable background for him as yet.....slacker I am ;)

I love your holiday pic it looks great! :clap
