This is the first etchy I'v ever finished 100%.

And the first one I'm really, really proud of! I etched her to a bay roan, following Mel Millers hair chart on her blog.

I then etched her a blaze, and gave her a blue eye, detailed her hooves, and pinkend (? lol) her muzzle. :)

Last, I covered her with a coat or two of Matte finish.

Please excuse the dust in the pictures. :grump

You know for your first etchie she looks pretty good! I like the pattern and her blaze is nice & realistic. The only thing I can think of is the large etched area of white. It does leave a lot of marks in 'large white' areas. One of the easier ways i've heard of people who etch to deal with this is to use acetone to take off the parts they want white then etch into the area so you make it look like a more natural 'etch job'. Very cute mare!

I did use a tee bit of nail polish remover on my Akhal Teke CM, as he has large areas or white. I get a little worried about dripping it though, no matter how little I put on, and how much I dap it on a paper towel, it all seems to just come pouring out when I rub it on the model. Lol! I use a Q-tip BTW. :)

Thanks again! :hugg

Fantastic job for your first etchie! Stablemates are difficult for a first time etch project so I teach in my workshops to start out with Traditional size and work your way down. May I suggest a few things? Try making your etch strokes a bit shorter and closer together. You're trying to simulate tiny hairs and the hairs on a Stablemate would be much smaller. On your larger white areas try using the flat side of your blade to smooth the area after etching the paint off. This will take most of the blade marks off. The rest should "fill in" when you seal the horse. I never use acetone or nail polish remover as it will soften the plastic and I worry about long term effects if the acetone is not all removed. Before sealing look for any stay bits of remaing paint with a magnifying glass. You'd be surprised at the tiny bits of paint still in the areas that you thought were white.

Hope this helps!

Happy Etching!

Nice job Jenn, I don't have any advice since I don't etch but still.

Some day I will have one of Lindy's pieces in my herd. She is the Master... or would that Mistress? :grin

Wow -- that turned out very, very nice....especially for your first one.

Yeah -- SM's can be tough, because they are of such a small scale. As pointed out, you should make your etch strokes shorter in length for an SM, to make the hairs more in scale with the model. But, still, overall, it's pretty darned good! :thumbsup

I've never tried it... I've thought about it many times, but never actually got around to trying an etchy...

Have fund with your next one!!! :wink

Yeah, I just got a fresh eye on her today, they are a bit long.

If I don't finish another before, I'm taking her to Breyerfest to show. Lol She might not win, but I can still try :haha

Thanks! :D

Great job! Yes, stablemates can be hard to etch - I have done a few etchies in my time, actually just finished one today....

Does anyone else get a sore wrist - lol! I guess that is something that those who etch can get - I have done a few etchies in the last week which I am not used to - lol!

Very cute! She turned out wonderfully for your first! I agree with what was already said about trying to make the hairs shorter. You'll never get them totally to scale, especially on a SM, but the overall effect will be a bit more realistic. Good luck at the show!
