View Full Version : How do you store your hobby mags/horse mags?

So I am in the full swing of new year's cleaning and reorganizing and as I was looking at the daunting stack of horse magazines I subscribe to and model magazines....I was thinking...how do other people store these? I like to have them easy to get to, but I don't have a ton of space. I was thinking of just using some redwelds with labels in one of my filing cabinets but thought I would see if some other Blabbers have more creative ideas?

You can get special folders/box things at the office supply that hold magazines upright like books. Mostly, though, I just stuff them in a box as I don't have the shelf space.

Yeah, we have some of those- they sit upright on our bookshelf. They're made of plastic and come in multiple colors. They make the mags easier to find (there's a spot for labels) and make for less wear-and-tear on the mags. Good luck with your organizing (hope you're better at it than me, lol!) :grintongue

I started doing this a couple years ago myself. I went out and bought a couple of "tote-n-go" http://www.staples.com/Large-Tote-n-Go/product_379413?cmArea=SEARCH and divided everything out by year in hanging folders (least for JAH). My older stuff (THHN & MHG) are in the magazine storage boxes mentioned above (http://www.staples.com/Bankers-Box-Maximum-Strength-Magazine-Files-Oversized/product_513176?cmArea=SEARCH) - or in milk crates cramed together. I need to sort through these one of these days. I like the tote-n-go things because they are safe from mosture and such.

I do not save mine anymore but I do have some vintage MLP coloring books and such now and I use the magazine holders you can put in a ring binder, it works great.

At the moment, mine are in boxes that used to hold reams of paper at work. They're extremely heavy, so not a method I recommend, LOL.

I can't remember who had this, though I think it was aneedforfun. He had them in 3 ring binders, in those clear file holder things. Then he had on the outside what they were! I thought it was a great idea

Yeah those are the ones I use too, they are meant for magazines but as long as it is not a stapled spine they work. They used to come in two sizes, one about right for a Readers Digest the other fits normal mags. But not UK A4 stuff.

I store my stapled magazines in archival-quality boxes. The JAHs go in sheet protectors, as do my digest-sized magazines, and into binders. I tried those plastic spine things, but they didn't work out for me - if the magazine was too thin, they'd slide out, and if they were too thick, they'd bend and warp.

You can get A4 sheet protectors and binders in the U.S., but you have to special order them. (Can't remember where I ordered mine last time - I'll need to get more soon!)

Thanks for the ideas guys. Guess for the time being I am just going to store them in hanging folders in my "model horse" filing cabinet....only because I don't have enough of them right now to do anything fancy, but once I add more, I may go to the storage boxes.

It does sort of depend on if you want archival quality storage. Archival needs are different from just keeping them in one nice handy place. What are you looking for?

I don't keep magazines. I have a big binder for each periodical I receive. I clip out and glue articles/reference pics from the mags onto heavy cardstock and store these sheets in binders. I've got ten years worth of what I found interesting in some mags in one big binder. Saves a lot of clutter.

I do this as well. I'm mostly interested in pictures to physically keep around my studio, so that is what is hacked out and glued to paper. They are then inserted into page protectors and put in binders. Its a neverending game of catch-up! :haha

The few hobby mags that I do have are in a cardboard magazine holder from Ikea.

I'm in the process of clipping my magazines (exceptions are the smaller Crabbet Influence, The Khamsat, Horse of Kings, The Andalusian, with many cases of items of interest on both sides), closer to done than not, as often the older magazines have more meat to them. I have a number of small boxes of articles/clippings that I will have to go through and file for reference, eventually into file cabinets. Nearly thirty years of Arabian Horse World becomes too much of a presence in a small apartment, with all the actual books as well.

Actually I recalled seeing his binder pics and thought they were a terrific way to store them, but could never find the pics again!

I think if I eventually get some nice bookcases, then I will go to a higher quality way of storage, but for now, I am just hanging them in hanging folders by year in my filing cabinet.

If you ever want to part with any of your Arabian Horse World magazines let me know I would love to have some :)

Yeah, I have 15 years of JAH plus the odd catalog and coloring book stuffed into a VCR box on the shelf in a closet at my mom's house. :uh Not exactly what I want to be heaving from over my head to look something up...

Ideally, someday, when my future husband is a world famous inventor of surgical equipment, and we have a big house in the Hamptons with a Model Horse Wing, I'll have a Library with filing cabinets to make everything nice and neat. Of course, I have no idea how soon that will happen. :haha
